Hot desk vs dedicated desk: which suits you?

A practical guide to choosing between the two — including what you should expect to pay in Mumbai's western suburbs and when to upgrade.

Both seats are part of a shared work hall. The difference is whether you sit at the same one every day, and whether you can leave gear overnight.

Hot desk is right for you if...

  • You work from the space 1 to 3 days a week
  • You don't carry a monitor or external setup
  • You're price-sensitive and just want a place to focus
  • You're testing whether coworking even fits your workflow

Dedicated desk is right for you if...

  • You're at the office most days
  • You'd benefit from a permanent dual-monitor setup
  • You need a fixed seat to receive samples, parcels or files
  • You're a freelancer who'd like a 'place of work' for your CA

Pricing, roughly

In Mira Road, Bhayandar and the surrounding western suburbs, hot desks tend to start around ₹6,000/month and dedicated desks around ₹10,000/month, exclusive of GST. Spaces with a strong location, fast internet and proper meeting rooms charge more — usually worth it if you bring clients in.

When to upgrade

If you find yourself reserving the same seat every day, queuing for phone booths, or storing gear in a backpack — you've outgrown the hot desk. It's almost always cheaper than the productivity tax of fighting the space.
